I would not give you chains to
shackle you to life’s
redundant themes
instead I would offer
you wings
that you might see the vast and glittering Sahara
or the sun set copper and gold
between the wise columns
of ancient Athens
feel the beautiful patience that
reared the wordless splendour of the
Taj Mahal
breathe the intense green from atop
the heights of Quetzalcoatl’s temples
in Mexico’s dying jungles
Chains would hold you to promises
you would not be keeping
in your heart
Wings would give you the grace of truth
and the joy of freedom
No love, breathe easily
for I would not give you chains
